What is Bespoke?

Bespoke is a term employed in a variety of applications to mean an item custom-made to the buyer's specification. While applied to many items now, from computer software to luxury car appointments, the term historically was applied only to tailored clothing, shirts, and other parts of men's apparel.

The word Bespoke itself is derived from the verb to bespeak, to "speak for something", in the specialised meaning "to give order for it to be made". The term Bespoke in fashion is reserved for individually crafted clothing, in contrast with mass manufactured ready-to-wear (also called off-the-peg or off-the-rack).
A similar term is Haute Couture, French for "high sewing" or "high dressmaking".
Both terms refer to the creation of custom clothing. Clothing is made to order for each customer, and it is made from high-quality material and created with skill and extreme attention to detail.

Our Bespoke Collection

As the years pass, the fashion industry becomes further engulfed by mass-produced, ready-to-wear clothing. Even more unfortunate is the fact that the quality of mass-produced garments is declining rapidly.
We have long since realised the difficulty of finding quality craftsmanship and originality in clothing these days. As such, upon opening Faery Silks we decided to create an ever-growing collection of unique, top-quality Bespoke Garments.

Our range features carefully chosen garments that are original, beautiful and made to last (unlike so many mass manufactured clothes!) - from cosy knitted creations, to delicate crochet, to irresistible hand-dyed silk. We choose only the most exceptional natural yarns and fabrics.

Our Bespoke clothing is hand-made by a select few skilled couturiers (clothiers who create custom garments). Each garment is made-to-order with quality care and expertise, customised to the client's requests - you choose the desired size, colours and embellishments!
Our couturiers are more than just good knitters or crocheters – they are our ‘GRANNY TEAM’. (Please understand that the term ‘Granny’ used throughout our website is an affectionate term we use for our team of knitters and applies to any of our team, whether or not they have grandchildren.)
We make sure that all of our garments are a true one-off, so we are proud to tell you that it will be hand-knitted by one of our Grannies, because after all - who knows more about knitting than grannies? We believe in the natural ways and sustainability and want to reignite the passion for handmade, ethically produced fashion. We offer a wonderful, diverse range of unique clothing with many designs and patterns - Cables, Fine Lace, Aran, Fair Isle, Intarsia, and many other styles can be found in our expanding collection!

We are proud to use almost exclusively 100% natural, Australian yarns to hand-make all of our Bespoke Garments. We have many top-quality ranges of different colours and beautiful yarns – textured, worsted, dyed and even hand-spun.
